Giving Back During the Holidays
The holidays are a time for families and friends to come together to foster connection, joy, and warmth. However, for many, this may not be the case.
This holiday season, we are reminded of the power of compassion and the importance of giving back to our communities to create a positive impact. When we prioritize giving back, we uplift those in need, and also enrich our own lives. Through volunteering, donating, supporting local businesses, and just sharing some of our time with others, every single act of kindness can make a difference.
There are many charitable organizations and worthy causes to look into. Here are some of our suggestions: Contribute to specific initiatives where you know your support will make a direct and tangible impact, such as shelters that provide for unhoused families and individuals. Also consider supporting causes that resonate strongly with you and aligns with your values, as this can bring even more joy to your giving. Contributing with smaller donations or committing to volunteering throughout the year can also make a sustained change over time.
Initiatives and organizations such as shelters (for families, individuals, and animals), refugee assistance resources, and soup kitchens also allow us to personally connect with those we are supporting.
If you are in Calgary and surrounding areas, here are a few organizations you can support this holiday season:
- Alberta Shelters – Individuals and families can access emergency shelters and temporary housing when facing family violence, domestic violence or homelessness.
- Community Food Resources – Providing food and resources to a range of groups such as families, women, students, faculty, children, specific neighbourhoods, and emergency situations.
- Access to Food City-Wide – Call 211 or see a list of resources throughout the city and by quadrant, including: Brown Bagging 4 Kids, Alex Community Food Centre, Calgary Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, Seniors’ Resource Society, Veteran’s Food Bank, and many more.
