How to Scale High-Mix, High-Volume Production with Smart Automation

High-mix, high-volume manufacturing comes with a unique set of challenges. Products change frequently, volumes can grow quickly, and expectations around quality, cost, and delivery remain high. For contract electronics manufacturers, scaling in this environment is not as simple as adding more people or running longer shifts. To grow efficiently and reliably, smart automation becomes essential.

At DSM, continuous improvement is central to how we support our customers. By investing in automation and refining our processes, we help mid-market OEMs scale production while maintaining consistency, quality, and cost control.

Why Automation Matters in High-Mix, High-Volume Manufacturing

High-mix production requires flexibility, while high-volume builds demand speed and repeatability. Manual processes can struggle to balance both, especially as complexity increases. Variability, bottlenecks, and rework often follow.

Automation helps stabilize critical assembly steps by reducing manual handling and standardizing execution. When implemented thoughtfully, automated systems allow manufacturers to move faster without losing flexibility. This makes automation a strong fit for high-mix, high-volume programs where efficiency and consistency need to work together.

Why Automation Is Important for Mid-Market OEMs

For mid-market Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), automation is increasingly a necessity rather than a nice-to-have. As companies grow, production demands increase, but labor availability, cost pressures, and quality expectations remain constant.

Smart automation helps mid-market OEMs scale without adding unnecessary risk. It allows production to increase without proportional increases in labor, improves repeatability, and supports long-term growth without frequent process changes.

Working with an EMS partner that invests in automation also gives OEMs access to advanced manufacturing capabilities without the need for large capital investments of their own.

How Automated Assembly Improves Outcomes for Customers

Automated assembly improves performance across several areas. Cycle times are reduced through continuous operation and minimized downtime. Quality improves through consistent, repeatable execution. Risk is reduced by limiting manual handling and process variation.

For customers, these improvements lead to faster builds, more predictable quality, and better control over timelines and costs. Automation also allows skilled operators to focus on higher-value work such as quality monitoring, troubleshooting, and process improvement.

A Practical Example: Automated Screw Fastening at DSM

As part of our ongoing focus on continuous improvement, DSM recently added new automated screw fastening systems to our Calgary manufacturing facility. These systems strengthen backend mechanical assembly for high-mix, high-volume programs and replace a traditionally manual, time-intensive process.

The systems operate on dual platforms, allowing two boards to run independently or at the same time. While one platform completes its fastening cycle, the second is already in operation. This creates a smooth, continuous workflow with minimal downtime. Operators can unload and reload one board while the other continues running, keeping production moving without interruption.

The results are measurable. Compared to manual assembly, the system saves 15 to 20 seconds per two boards. At scale, this leads to meaningful time and cost savings. It also delivers faster cycle times, improved throughput for high-volume builds, and consistent torque, alignment, and fastening quality across every unit. Reduced manual handling improves repeatability and lowers risk, while the system’s design supports scalability as product lines grow.

What This Means for Our Customers

For our customers, this investment means faster delivery, more consistent quality, and a manufacturing partner that actively works to remove inefficiencies from the production process. These benefits become even more valuable as volumes increase, helping protect both timelines and budgets.

Continuing to Invest in Smarter Manufacturing

At DSM, automation is not about adding technology for the sake of it. It is about making practical improvements that support our customers and strengthen electronics manufacturing performance.

We continue to invest in automation, process refinement, and technology improvements to ensure our customers are supported as their products and production needs evolve.
