DSM Observes Orange Shirt Day

 In DSM Blog

Every year on September 30th, Canadians observe Orange Shirt Day to honor the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada, and take meaningful steps towards reconciliation. The day references a real orange shirt belonging to Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor. The shirt has become a powerful symbol of remembrance and hope. As the Founder and Ambassador of the Orange Shirt Society, Phyllis tours the country sharing her story and encouraging dialogue around the school system. Read more about her story here.

On this day, we at DSM wore orange as a sign of solidarity and support for survivors and their families. We take a moment to listen to the stories and experiences of survivors and their families. We strive to create an inclusive and compassionate society where every voice is heard and respected. In Canada, schools, workplaces, and communities come together to educate ourselves and engage in discussions about the path to reconciliation. This isn’t just one day; it’s a continuous journey towards a more inclusive future for all Canadians.

In the words of Phyllis Webstad herself, “Every child matters.” And on Orange Shirt Day, we affirm our dedication to a country where every child’s dignity, culture, and rights are respected and cherished.
